Decorative buckles and badges add pizzazz to any outfit. And with that in mind, Malaysian women’s designer label Khoon Hooi revealed its new Spring 2018 collection, which celebrates decorative detailing with military-like utilitarian touches.
Kelvin Tan, assistant designer at Khoon Hooi shared that this new collection is inspired by the safari. “We call it the luxury voyage collection, basically safari style clashed with evening wear.”
With a signature beading technique and delicate feathers on clean cut fabric of the finest textures, every item is made to feel as luxurious as it looks.
One of Khoon Hoi’s bestsellers at the recent Paris Fashion Week was the Henrietta. Imagine Khoon Hooi’s signature structured silhouette, accented with elaborate jeweled buckles and oversized pockets, and paired with flouncy tulle skirt.
“Tafetta is a signature fabric at Khoon Hooi while tulle is more experimental,” shared. “We are very pleased with the creation of this dress.”
Decorative detailing seen throughout the collection are ostrich feathers and hand-stitched jewel-toned crystals. Fabrics used include brocade, tulle and taffeta, played up with shades of melon and sage.
Another favourite is the dress, Fae, an elegant acid floral frock with crystal beadwork ‘badges’. “The inspiration of the brocade print is a safari at sunset,” said Tan. “
A key silhouette seen in the collection makes use of corsetry. Brocade-embellished corsets are fitted over the Veronique evening gown and voluminous white blouse to accentuate the waistline.
This season marks Khoon Hooi’s first demi-couture range. “It takes 30 to 40 hours just to embroider each dress and stick on the ostrich feathers,” said Tan. “Each dress will look different because each feather length is different.”
Other distinct looks are also defined by exaggerated sleeves, tulle layering and asymmetrical necklines.
